In this day and age, Social Media has taken the planet by storm. Both businesses and consumers have been thrust into the social abyss of likes, followers, and shares. This newfound realm, and in some cases, human habitat, is filled with an abundance of curious consumers and vast opportunities just waiting to be discovered. Although there are many “how-to” guides available in the massive library of online media, we want to focus our readers on the top “4 Dos” when establishing a presence on social media. So, You Think You Can Boss is a part of an upcoming online course in which we cover in more detail these and other steps when entering the digital arena. This article is a snapshot of the necessary steps that we recommend that beginner Brands consider before entering the digital playing field.

Step 1: Conduct a Corporate Meeting with Yourself to Brainstorm Your Ideas

New Brands should take out their notebooks, iPads, Apps, or other media to brainstorm their ideas before launching into the social universe. This task is extremely valuable when conjuring up the special sauce that makes Brands memorable, unique, and stand out. Items to consider are business names, business formation choice (and why), and the Brand’s purpose. Brands must understand and formulate “their why” in the beginning.

Step 2: Research, Research, Research — Gaining an In-depth Knowledge of Exactly What Social Media Actually Is

Social Media consists of a variety of intricate parts that make up the whole. Some believe that social media is only about gaining likes, having a large following, and posting on social platforms daily. Sadly, this is NOT the case. Social Media encompasses many different departments across many areas of study. Professional social media strategist/specialist manage various functions such as:

o Content Creation

o Graphic Design

o Analytical Strategy

o Copy

o Marketing (Digital)

o Listening/Monitoring

o Engagement

o Advertising

o Hashtag Curation

Ensure that you are, at a minimum, familiar with each role to ensure maximum success rate and to protect from fraudulent accounts and organizations.

Brands must have a keen understanding of milestones for basic social media processes. These fundamental processes give Brands a starting point of all the dynamics involved in the social media world. This is a critical knowledge point, especially with making decisions to outsource social media work or assuming these roles themselves.

Step 3: Develop a Social Media Strategy

Developing a Social Media Brand Strategy is vital for all Brands that attempt to penetrate the fabric of the algorithmic social universe. In short, brand strategies are the treasure maps that lead brands to success. It is essentially a blueprint on how the Brand will accomplish what it first set out to do. These strategies include creating the overall business objectives and goals, building a SWOT Analysis, establishing KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), and choosing the correct social platforms in which to dwell.

Step 4: Content is King and Queen

Content is the driving force behind social. Ensure that your content is captivating, engaging, and valuable. Building a substantial following on social media can mean that it will take time for your post to grow organically. Finding your voice and translating it through your visual content will help promote and sustain your Brand. Create a 15-day content calendar (at a minimum) of posts to ensure that followers have materials to keep them interested and connected.
